The visiting Lansdowne Rugby Club leapfrogged over Morris into first place with a compelling come from behind victory over the New Jerseyans this past weekend. The match was characterized by outstanding defense, sloppy play and dramatic scores, and also ended Lansdowne's brief 2 game losing streak. The 1st half began with Lansdowne being camped out in Morris' half of the pitch through imposing forward play. However, the Irishmen turned the ball over due to an infraction, thereby giving Morris good field position and a chance at a counterattack. The homeside was unable to capitalize as the ball bounded off of an errant pass into the referee, negating the advantage. But Morris showed mettle and were able to score a lovely try by their outstanding inside center with only minutes left in the half.
The second half began in a similar fashion as the first until the halfway point as a physical forward platform by the Irishman led to a rolling maul and resulted in a try, thereby tying the score. The stop and go match appeared that it might end in a draw until the 74th minute, when Man of the Match Manus O'Sullivan was sin binned for a professional foul. But the incident seemed to have a reverse effect on the visitors, who began a drive down to the homeside's 35 meter mark. A penalty was called against Morris which gave wing Shane Langan a shot at goal from an extremely awkward angle. On the second to last play of the match, Kerryman Langan calmly slotted the ball over the posts, causing the Irish bench to erupt in celebration.
Besides the aforementioned O'Sullivan, notable performances were put in by Brian Fingleton, Austin Purcell, Shane Langan, Doug Gagnol, Gavin Butler and Blake Mannion.
The "B" side match was characterized by the linkup between Morris' outstanding inside center and strong side wing duo as they combined for 4 tries in the homeside's 32-14 victory. Lansdowne Man of the Match was ageless Gerry Powers with outstanding performances by Brendan Garrone, PJ Coward and Tom Knudsen. Lansdowne's next match is a mouth-watering away contest against last season's division pacesetters the Rockaway Fisheads on November 1st.
Lansdowne practices are Monday and Wednesday at Tibbets Brook Park in Yonkers at 8:00 PM. Those interested in playing should come on down or conatct the Club at:1(914)584-4541, or website: www.lansdownerugbyclub.com, or e-mail:
