On Saturday, September 19,Lansdowne used savvy forward play and clever positional kicking from the backline to beat the Village Lions by 17-8.
The match was played on Randall's Island under perfect weather conditions which played to neither side's advantage. The Lions began the match on attack and spent the better part of the first 20 minutes entrenched in the Lansdowne half. However, the Lansdowne defense-led by Austin Purcell-was resolute and all the Lions gained from their efforts was a 3 point penalty.Lansdowne responded only 3 minutes later as perfect on the day Johnny Coghlan slotted his first of 4 penalties to even the score. The Lansdowne defense continued to sparkle and another turnover led to a second Coghlan penalty at minute 33 giving the Irishmen the lead for good.
The second half began in the same fashion as the first ended with the Lansdowne defense, spearheaded by Blake Mannion,Manus O'Sullivan and Brian Fingleton, kept disrupting the Lions' attack, thereby giving Lansdowne the majority of possession.#8 Anthony Priest launched a kick from the Irish 22.Dave Russell pounced on the ball and engaged in a spectacular kick and chase down to the Lions' 5 meter line.Brian Fingleton blocked an attempted clearance kick from the in-goal and touched down. However, the Lions responded strongly and, after some impressive forward play and several phases, were able to score a late try, narrowing the lead to 14-8.Lansdowne were focused and motivated in response and had thunderous runs downfield by Eric Kops and Mike Poplaski. An offsides by the Lions led to Johnny Coghlan closing the scoring as he slotted in the 33rd minute.
The "B" game was a particularly grueling match that ended in a 17 all draw after the Lions had jumped out to a 10-0 lead.Standouts include try scorers Kwami Surpris and John Durney as well as boot specialist Johnny Coghlan.
