On September 26,2009,Montauk deservedly came out on top against a determined Lansdowne side in a real cracker match at Tibbetts Brook Park.
The final score was 12-9 as all of the points were obtained through penalties. Each time a team threatened the other deep inside territory, the defense would step up and either force a turnover or outwork the opposition to win a penalty.
The match saw Montauk take an early lead as a Lansdowne infringement gave the Long Islanders a shot at goal. The visitors slotted in the 6th minute giving them a 3 point advantage.Montauk's scrummaging was quite impressive and managed to push Lansdowne off the ball giving them a platform to feed their backs. However,Lansdowne responded accordingly and forced a turnover for a counterrattack.A Montauk penalty saw Johnny Coghlan slot in the 16th minute to tie the score. The game went back and forth for several minutes as neither side gained a true advantage. However, the Lansdowne lineout, led by Man of the Match Owen Mayer,Manus O'Sullivan,PJ Coward, and Anthony Priest, was quite impressive and enabled the homeside to maintain possession late and go on the offensive. An offside at a ruck gave Johnny Coghlan a shot a goal which he slotted to give the Irishmen a 6-3 lead at the end of the half.
The beginning of the 2nd half saw some exquisite running by Nathan Board,Austin Purcell,Brian Fingleton,Blake Mannion and Mike Poplaski.A stomping incident in the 5th minute saw the referee issue a red card to a Montauk flanker, reducing their numbers to 14.The visitors responded fiercely and were awarded an 8th minute penalty, which they calmly slotted, tying the score. The visitors continued pressure and kicked another penalty in minute 16,thereby gaining the lead.A physical battle was taking place between the 22s with neither side scoring, until the 33rd minute when Johnny Coghlan successfully landed a penalty after an infringement.Montauk responded yet again and were successful on a 37th minute penalty. However, the Irishmen were resolute in response and chose to go for the win rather than a tie as a penalty was awarded inside the Montauk 10.A successful Lansdowne lineout was thwarted by a pilfered ball through some seriously dedicated Montauk defense. The final numbers were 12-9 for Montauk.
The "B" match saw Lansdowne win by 10-7.Some exquisite rugby was played by Man of the Match Shane Langan-who scored all of Lansdowne's points, ageless Gerry Powers,Brendan Garrone and "Rampaging"Steven Murphy.
