On Saturday,October 3,homeside Bayonne Bombers took advantage of 2 early tries in beating Lansdowne by 23-7.
Lansdowne's inability to care for the ball while at Bayonne's 5 meter line on 4 separate occasions prevented the Irishmen from making the numbers closer.Bayonne scored first as an infringement by 30 meters out in the 5th minute led to a successful penalty by the New Jerseymen's outhalf. The homeside's lineout proved to be quite successful in maintaining possession as Bayonne didn't lose any of their own lineouts until late in the first half.In the 9th minute,a commanding 40 meter run by Bayonne's center led to a try and gave the homeside a 8-0 advantage.Only 6 minutes later,Bayonne struck again on a 40 meter gallop into the in-goal by their fullback, stretching the lead to 15-0.Despite frequent turnover ball offensively, the Lansdowne defense managed to shut down the Bayonne attack for the next 18 minutes. However,in the 33rd,an errant Lansdowne pass of off a stolen lineout led to a Bayonne lock showing surprising speed in running in from 25 meters out.
The second half began quickly for Bayonne,as,after a 5th minute infringement by the visitors, the homeside's outhalf slotted again for a 23 point advantage. The Lansdowne defense, led by Man of the Match Anthony Priest,Austin Purcell,Manus O'Sullivan and Mike Poplaski, settled down and stifled the Bayonne attack leading to several forays into the homeside's territory. However, the Irishmen were unable to take advantage as Bayonne were up for the challenge, until the 35th minute when Blake Mannion typically stole a pass and flew into the in-goal.The score was finalized as Johnny Coghlan successfully converted.
The "B" side saw the New Jerseymen come out on top again by 23-13 despite some impressive efforts from rising star and Man of the Match Kwame Surpis,Gerry Powers and Mike (you're unwelcome on my side of the pitch even if you're my teammate) Benvenuto.
