This past Saturday, Lansdowne were quite impressive in winning the Social Division of the annual Long Island Tournament despite heavy winds which played havoc with any kicking game as teams were forced to keep the ball out of the air. Several outstanding individual efforts combined with stifling team defense were the difference as the Irishmen were victorious in 4 matches en route to the Championship.

In the opener, Lansdowne registered an outstanding performance against Rockaway, coming away with a 26-0 victory. The match was typefied by Lansdowne's relentless work at the breakdowns and domination of possession. Some terrific offensive displays were spearheaded by try-scorers Gavin Butler(2), Brian Fingleton and PJ Coward.

The second encounter was easily the best match of the group as Lansdowne prevailed against an effective Gotham Knights squad by 17-12. John McKenzie, Brian Fingleton, Ian O'Connor and Shane Rafferty kept Gotham at bay, while PJ Coward and Brian Fingleton each scored their second tries of the day. Lansdowne went into the half leading by 10-0.In the second half, PJ Coward's 3rd try seemed to put the game away, but Gotham weren't content to call it a day and answered with 2 scintillating long-distance tries.

The third match saw Lansdowne prevail against the Warthogs by 22-12. Brian Fingleton opened the scoring by notching his 3rd try of the day. The Warthogs tied the game as their massive second row bulled his way across the line off of a quick tap penalty. But Lansdowne responded in kind as Luis Berroteran ran in from the 22 and touched down. The Irishmen lengthened the lead as Rob Johnstone registered his 1st Lansdowne try in the 2nd half, but the Warthogs kept it interesting and scored a late try. Johnny Coghlan closed the scoring with a long distance penalty.

The Championship match was won by Lansdowne against hosts Long Island "B" by a score of 7-0. Ian O'Connor scored a try early on and the rest of the game was characterized by outstanding physical defenses on each side.

Lansdowne practices are held at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers every Monday and Wednesday at 8:30 PM.
